Five StudPuller Mistakes the Manual Warns You About

A ratchet, too long on the throttle, diesel for lube. Five mistakes the StudPuller manual warns about, and what to do instead.

The StudPuller manual does not sugarcoat. Here are five things it tells you not to do. Know them before the first stud.

1. Turning it with a ratchet or a pipe wrench

The manual's rule: rotate the StudPuller only with a properly inserted impact wrench drive tool. A ratchet or pipe wrench will void the warranty and could permanently damage the tool.

2. Hammering past 20 seconds

The manual caps impact operation at 20 seconds at a time. A stud that has not started to rotate by then needs a different removal method. More hammering is not on the list.

3. Lubing with diesel, or not at all

Lubrication of the internal cams or cam sleeve is critical. The manual uses that word, so treat it that way.

The wrong lube is its own mistake. Never lubricate the tool with flammable or volatile liquids such as kerosene or diesel.

So what goes on the cams? Any industrial grade nickel based anti-seize lubricant will provide sufficient lubrication, per the manual. Its own recommendation is Molykote G-n Plus Paste.

4. Letting shavings into the cam

When you fit new jaws, keep the sleeve surface free of dirt and debris. Metal shavings caught between the cam surfaces and the jaws can cause significant damage if they are not removed before work starts.

5. Losing track of how the jaws came out

A jaw or cage swap starts at the retaining ring. Take the cage and jaws out of the tool body, and note which way they sat.

Fit the new parts in the correct orientation, remove or install, then seat the retaining ring back in its groove.

Before the tool goes back to work, turn the cage and jaw assembly by hand. It should move easily along the internal cam.

The rule under all five

If there is any doubt about how to run the StudPuller, do not run it. Improper use voids the warranty.
