History of the StudPuller
TRW Industries LLC, was created in Texas, and operates through two divisions ESD Valves and SRT Manufacturing. ESD Valves produces air shutoff valves for diesel engines, while SRT manufactures precision stud removal and installation tools. To unify the market, SRT coined the term StudPuller®, setting a new industry standard.Seeing the need for a reliable solution, TRW engineered a patented dual-cam design that grips studs evenly and breaks the toughest mechanical binds. As wind energy surged, GE Wind Energy partnered with TRW to develop a lightweight, durable StudPuller tailored for turbine maintenance strong enough for industrial use, yet portable for technicians working hundreds of feet uptower.
As technicians moved to other wind energy companies, they began asking why their new companies weren’t using the StudPuller. Suddenly technicians knew pipe wrenches were no longer the tool of choice to remove studs. Siemens Gamesa began testing the tools and very quickly added the StudPuller to their repair manual as the specified way to remove studs. Now the StudPuller was the proven method for removing studs in wind applications. Other leaders in the industry like Vestas, Iberdrola, NextEra and Suzlon began making the StudPuller the official stud removal tool of the wind industry.
TRW didn’t stand still with the original design. As technicians began to provide feedback on how to improve the tools, we added a steel insert into the drive portion of the tool for durability. The steel anvil of the wrench now makes contact with a steel insert. GE reported removing 400 studs on one set of jaws.
Some wind companies began experimenting with reusing studs and with faster stud installation. TRW went old school and redesigned a collet tool that threads onto the studs so no damage is done to the threads. It’s the TRW Threaded StudPuller and it comes in every possible size. We also designed a stud installer that uses “secret sauce” so that the stud never sticks in the tool. Torque the stud down with confidence that the stud will stay torqued and the tool can be removed with no issues.

Wind farms can be in the middle of nowhere, so Vestas needs tools that work every time, no exceptions. TRW's StudPuller gives Vestas the confidence that jobs will be completed without the delays that can complicate remote operations.
- Michael O (Vestas)
Siemens was so excited about the StudPuller and the customer service of TRW that we put it in our repair manual as the "go to tool" for stud removal.
- Jack L. (Siemens Energy)
15 years ago GE Wind commissioned TRW to develop stud removers that were light enough to take up tower, strong enough to pull frozen studs and durable enough to last for years. TRW far exceeded our every expectation.
- Dennis C. (GE)
Stud removal was always the bottleneck of operations until we purchased the StudPuller. We quickly realized we could remove hundreds of studs faster and safer, which increased our overall productivity.
